Event details

This one-day conference is running at Southampton Education School on Friday 24th ‎April and has been developed for primary teachers across EYFS, key stage 1 and key ‎stage 2. Teachers of key stage 3 with an interest in phonics are also welcome to ‎attend.‎ We now have a special discount for Teaching Assistants to recognise that both teachers and teaching assistants play a key role in teaching phonics and ‎all are welcome at the conference. We are delighted to be able to offer places for ‎teaching assistants at £90 per delegate.‎

Join us for a day of workshops and presentations on phonics across the primary curriculum. The key ideas addressed by the conference include exploration of:

  • evidence-based approaches to teaching phonics,
  • progression in phonics from EYFS through key stage 1 to key stage 2,
  • embedding phonics into the curriculum and ensuring children apply their learning,
  • effective tracking and assessment,
  • enabling parents and others to support the teaching of phonics
  • providing engaging and enjoyable strategies for adults and children!<

Keynote Speaker: Gordon Askew

Gordon Askew, now (largely) retired, was until May 2014 the Literacy and Phonics Adviser to the Department for Education. In this role he was involved in developing the Department’s core criteria for effective systematic phonics teaching; in evaluating materials for the DfE ‘Importance of Phonics’ catalogue; in monitoring the phonics training provided under the Department’s recent match-funded scheme and in developing guidance around the Year One Phonics Screening Check. He was a contributor to the Primary English Programme of Study for the new National Curriculum. Gordon has built up his literacy and phonics expertise over the course of more than forty years’ experience in primary education. This has included seventeen years as a primary school headteacher as well as roles as Local Authority English Adviser, lecturer, author and editor, phonics trainer, Ofsted inspector and DfE School Standards Adviser.

Workshops

As well as the two keynote sessions led by Gordon Askew, we have morning and afternoon ‎workshop sessions with all workshops being led by outstanding practitioners from across the ‎partnership. Delegates can choose whether to attend two workshops aimed at teachers from ‎the same age range, or to ‘mix and match’ across the day. ‎

Impact from CPD - make a difference

We are acutely aware of the importance of ensuring that all CPD has a strong, positive impact on those attending, leading to improved student outcomes. The conference planning team have been looking at a number of ways of achieving this:

  • Delegates will be asked to identify their personal learning objectives at the start of the day and reflect on these as they proceed;
  • Opportunities have been built in through the day for delegates to reflect on how they will follow up the sessions in school, including a final tea-time session where delegates can take individual queries to any of the presenters;
  • Following on from the day we plan to set up an early literacy inquiry group which will support those teachers and teaching assistants that are interested in exploring their practice further;
  • A short follow-up survey will remind delegates of the key learning from the day and ask them to consider what they have implemented as a result and the impact on themselves, their colleagues and children’s learning.

Cost and Booking a Place

The cost of the programme is £120 for teachers, including resources, refreshments and lunch. For more than one attending from the same school, the cost is £100.  So, for two teachers from the same school, the fee is £200; for three teachers from the same school the fee is £300, etc.  We have a special discounted rate for teaching assistants of £90.
