Event details

What is your talk about? Space can help to explore phenomena of inclusion/exclusion within educational organisations that might lead to marginalization. Beyond a binary understanding of "in and out", space can be used as an analytical tool to reveal multidimensional barriers or opportunities of students' participation.

Relating to our research project "Exploring Educational Spaces" we present methodological insights into the approaches of reconstruction and participation in inclusive education research – focusing on students' perspectives of the appropriation and production of educational space.

What are the key messages of your talk? Inclusion/Exclusion is not a status but is socially produced by actors in educational organisations. Hence, we want to emphasise that a research focus on students' spatial practices can help to reconstruct processes of inclusion/exclusion.

What are the implications for practice or research from your talk?

We want to point out the methodological interconnection of space as a research topic and spaces of belonging as a necessity for participatory research processes. Furthermore, we aspire to give impulses for a reflective use of space (e.g. retreat spaces) in inclusive school development.

Presenters: Prof. Dr. Andreas Köpfer and Kathrin Lemmer.
