Hi, I'm Dr Gary Lee Kee Khoon and I studied PhD Automotive Materials 1998 within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

True commitment is what my supervisor has demonstrated to me. I can still remember the time that even two days before Christmas, Dr Reed was still working together with me as we had set a deadline to complete my thesis on time.

When I joined Southampton University, the Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) Department was ranked among the top in Europe. My PhD project was jointly sponsored between ECS and the then Engineering Materials sub-department, which became part of Engineering Sciences and provided the applications area of my PhD. The jointly funded project also provided me with both a good scholarship package and a good opportunity to learn with top domain experts.

During my PhD work, my supervisors provided a good opportunity for me to work independently and they have provided good guidance as well. Looking back, the ability to work independently has benefited me in my career in both academic and industrial fields. True commitment is what my supervisor has demonstrated to me. I can still remember the time that even two days before Christmas, Dr Reed was still working together with me as we had set a deadline to complete my thesis on time.

The ability to communicate effectively among multidisciplinary experts was also something I learnt while pursuing my PhD in Southampton. I have always kept that level of commitment in mind and it has inspired me to give my full commitment to the tasks given to me.

About Gary

Gary received his BEng (Hons) and PhD from the University of Sheffield and Southampton University UK, in 1998 and 2002 and was 32 when he completed his PhD. His PhD work was sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC-UK) and Federal Mogul Technology where he investigated the application of artificial intelligent techniques in the prediction of fatigue in a variety of automotive materials. He was co-supervised by Prof Chris Harris and Dr Steve Gunn (Electronics and Computer Science) and Dr Philippa AS Reed (Engineering Sciences).

After his PhD, he went on to the University of East Anglia (UEA) to be a post-doc for three and a half years. He investigated the use of machine learning for bioinformatics application in which he had published a paper in Genome Research, 2006. He then returned back to Singapore in 2006 and joined the Institute of High Performance Computing, a research institute belonging to A*Star.

In April 2007 he was appointed as the team leader of the Advanced Software Architecture (ASA) team. His team looks into providing quality, efficiency and insight into the future of the computing paradigm. Dr Lee has research experience in applying machine learning in various applications (eg metallurgical, medical signal, bioinformatics, weather prediction, and infectious disease prediction). Currently, his research focuses on large scale data mining applications and deploying high performance computing to provide efficient performance.
