Southampton ranked top in England for Audiology in Complete University Guide 2021
Audiology teaching and research at the University of Southampton has been ranked first in England - and second in the UK - in subject rankings of the Complete University Guide 2021.
The health science discipline, which includes the study of hearing, balance and related disorders, is one of 15 Southampton subject areas placed within the top 10 nationally.
Southampton students benefit from over 45 years of audiology teaching at the only UK university with in-house audiology and auditory implant centres.
The subject is classified under Aural and Oral Sciences in the 2021 subject rankings which include Speech Science courses that aren’t covered at the Russell Group university.
Dr Daniel Rowan , Associate Professor of Audiology and Director of Programmes, says: “I am delighted that we have been ranked in the top three of aural and oral sciences in four of the past five years. It is the result of many years of dedication, hard work and ingenuity on the part of our entire audiology community, including university staff, students, placement educators and patients.
“I believe it reflects our dedication to inspire and support our students to challenge themselves to become the best healthcare professionals, and to provide the best possible care to their patients, that they can.”
Rankings in the Complete University Guide are calculated from entry standards, student satisfaction, research excellence and intensity, graduate prospects, student-staff ratio, university spending on services and facilities, graduates receiving a first or upper second class honours degree, and degree completion.
The University is placed 17th overall out of 130 universities listed in the Guide’s annual league table - a rise of three places making it the highest climber of any university within the top 20 this year.
University of Southampton President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark E Smith, says: “With all the uncertainty around at the moment it is really pleasing to see this very positive move in the latest Complete University Guide rankings, with the University of Southampton back inside the top 20 overall which very much reflects our emphasis on quality, be it teaching or research. It confirms that students receive a very high quality education here.
“As a nationally-relevant, world-leading university, Southampton will continue to press forward thanks to the dedication of our staff and students who I want to thank for keeping us amongst the top echelons of UK universities.”
