Background sounds can interfere with our ability to listen but also read, write, learn and think. Reading is a particularly useful task for studying cognitive effects of background sounds because the cognitive processes involved can be tracked objectively with high resolution in time. This presentation will summarise why studying reading in noise is potentially interesting to us in ISVR and some studies we’ve conducted to date, including showing that background sounds can have a large effect on reading even under relatively easy reading conditions.
