Tomas Hudec is a Postgraduate research student within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Tomas graduated from the Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia) in 2017 with a degree in Solid state physics (MSc).

Tomas Hudec is a Postgraduate research student currently pursuing a PhD as part of the nCATS research group where he is supervised by Professor Tomas Polcar and Assoc. Prof. Marian Mikula. His PhD is focused on the thin coatings with self-lubricating properties. Solid lubricants are a special group of solids with very low friction coefficients even in dry conditions (no need to supply oil lubricants). Solid lubricant thin films are extensively used in space applications where the environmental conditions strictly limit the use of other types of conventionally used lubricants, such as oils and greases. This project is in collaboration with Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia) and Czech Technical University in Prague (Czech Republic).

Research interests

The PhD project is funded/supported by:

Slovak Research and Development Agency under contract No. APVV-15-0173.

European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 721642: SOLUTION with support from OPVVV grant Novel nanostructures for engineering applications No. CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/16_026/0008396.

Part of the work is carried out with the support of CEITEC Nano Research Infrastructure (ID LM2015041, MEYS CR, 2016–2019), CEITEC Brno University of Technology.

Part of the work is supported by the South of England Analytical Electron Microscope grant (EP/K040375/1), within the David Cockayne Centre for Electron Microscopy, Department of Materials, University of Oxford.
