My PhD research investigates the portrayal of Black women in Hollywood from the 1960s to the present time, a combination of racism and feminism in films.
The importance of this study relies on the comparison between the past and the present representations of African American women and the effect of gender and ethnicity issues on their characterization. The main focus is the analysis of the stereotypical images associated to Black women in cinema, how these images contribute in their casting decisions and whether they have moved from the tradition or that the same images are still in performance but covered by new forms to make viewers think past race.
