Abstract: In this talk I’ll discuss my research into the relationship between play spaces, child citizenship and projects of urban redevelopment. During the nineteen-thirties children’s play and the redevelopment of East London became inextricably linked. A number of different urban spaces were constructed and produced as places of play: by local government and charities, by children’s popular culture and by libraries, schools and clubs in intergenerationally-written magazines. Play was variously represented as an everyday activity, a right, a transformative force, and the means through which children could participate in society. I will also touch on working with children on contemporary challenges drawing on historical material.
