Collecting environmental data from hard-to-reach places Seminar

Abstract: 

Measuring freshwater in the environment is challenging, particularly in remote locations. In this talk, Dr Bagshaw will discuss the design and development of wireless sensing solutions for freshwaters, including UK rivers and the bed of the Greenland ice sheet. She’ll describe the teams sensor family, what data they collect and how they deploy them. This includes Cryoegg, a sensor platform that can transit data through deep ice; and Hydrobean, a low cost technique for measuring UK river water quality. The data that they capture can be used to monitor and understand environmental changes in real time. But capturing those data can be a challenge, so Dr Bagshaw will review the progress to date, including data transmission through 2 km of ice, and discuss future plans.

Dr Liz Bagshaw

Bio: Dr Liz Bagshaw is an Associate Professor in Polar Environmental Change at the University of Bristol. Her research is dedicated to understanding meltwater in the glacial environment, using biogeochemistry, new sensor developments, and microbiology.
