In partnership with Solent NHS Trust we have created several new pioneering clinical doctoral research fellowships (4 years) which combine doctoral training with clinical practice.

We are now looking for a talented, motivated Occupational Therapy graduate who has demonstrated both academic and clinical excellence during their training (degree classifications at 2:1 or above) and is wishing to undertake doctoral-level clinical research whilst at the same time consolidating and developing their clinical practice.

Successful candidates will become full-time doctoral students of the Faculty of Health Sciences and will receive a yearly stipend of £14,000, full time UK PhD fees and a budget for consumables for a total of four years. The clinical component will be at band 5 level for the equivalent of 2 days per week.  Applicants must have an Occupational Therapy BSc (Hons) and HPC registration to allow them to work as clinicians within the NHS as of September 2011.

This studentship will be based on developing health literacy skills for NHS patients with lower literacy levels and will be agreed between the Trust, the Rehabilitation and Health Technology Research Group and the candidate.

Application Process:

Applicants should send the following to sohsreso@soton.ac.uk by Friday 12th August 2011 and should include the following:

  • An up-to-date CV which identifies the area (or areas) of clinical practice of particular interest for doctoral research and includes a summary of clinical achievements and highlights;
  • A 1000 word essay entitled: Clinical academic careers will shape the future of nursing and allied health professional practice - Discuss.
