International Congress on Acoustics 2019

Two students from the Intelligent Structures for Low Noise Environments reserach team recently presented their work at the 23rd International Congress on Acoustics in Aachen, Germany, alongside peers from across the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR).

PhD researcher Lawrence Singleton, presented the design and optimisation of a cable-mounted elastic metamaterial, for suppression of vibration in large cable structures while maintaining the constant cylindrical profile of the cable. Thus allowing it to be used in conjunction with pulleys or stored on a drum as required. 
 
PhD researcher Joe Tan, presented his work on the optimisation of the negative effective properties of an active-acoustic metamaterial consisting of a monopole or dipole loudspeaker.
 
Acoustic and elastic metamaterials are a relatively new concept and offer innovative ways of interacting with sound and vibration. This technology is being used to develop effective, compact and lightweight treatment for a wide range of problems in the field.

 

In addition to the two paper presentations, Dr Jordan Cheer was invited to organise and chair a session on Physical Aspects of Active Noise and Vibration Control in acknowledgement of his expertise in the field.
 
The International Congress on Acoustics is a triennial event run by the International Commission for Acoustics. This year the event was attended by more than 1600 people.
