Alongside her studies as a Law student, Avila Diana has started her own business during her time at the University of Southampton. In 2018, she launched her greetings card business, which depict marginalised groups including those with disabilities, identifying as LGBT+, ethnic minorities or problems with mental health. The Student’s Union and Student Enterprise team at the University have supported Avila’s business through mentoring advice and guidance, as well as funding opportunities.

Southampton offers a lot of opportunities, there is strong competition amongst students which drove me to succeed. During my studies, I discovered a passion for business which I was unaware existed.

The highlights of Avila’s time at Southampton Law School include participation in the Law socieities and mooting in advocacy competitions, which have developed confidence and presentation skills. Avila also enjoyed the additional seminars which focused on topics that she feels passionate about, such as Dr Onazi’s ‘Is there an African Path to Disability Justice?’ seminar, which examined disability rights in Africa and the issues people living on the continent face.

As a law student, I am a strong advocate for human rights and representation and firmly believe that positive change can only be brought about through actions and commitment.

When I applied to study Law I wanted to specialise in Human Rights and I am still pursuing this through the work I do with my business. I plan on continuing to grow it to a stage where I can partner up with international organisations and charities to tackle discrimination. My ultimate goal is to spread awareness, create dialogue and encourage all businesses to reassess their diversity ethos. Additionally, I hope to create positive change through my work and to one day employ a team of artists from these marginalised groups to create artwork which shares their stories.
