Influencing organisations

Once students leave us to find their professional role, there are many ways to keep in touch with us. Many of our alumni find a return to Highfield Campus, or contact with current students a rewarding experience. We provide many opportunities to reconnect, pay it forward and participate in the education, training and mentoring of current students and the next generation of legal professionals.

Mentoring and employment guidance from all walks of law are welcomed. Many Law School graduates have chosen to train as solicitors and are now partners and senior partners in some of the top law firms in the UK, including Linklaters, Herbert Smith Freehills, Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, MacFarlanes, Simmons and Simmons, Norton Rose Fulbright, Stephenson Harwood and Farrer and Co. Others have opted for a career at the Bar and feature in the country's top law directory the 'Legal 500' or have been appointed a QC. Yet further alumni are in careers in the legal departments of international companies, such as Vodafone, the insurance sector, central or local government, social work, the police, commerce or industry. Many alumni take their skills and creativity into non-legal roles at companies including Disney, Debenhams, Computing Magazine, and Specsavers. We take great pride in each and every one of our alumni and in their great variety and diversity, and delight in welcoming them back as they return to inspire our current students at the annual Careers Fair.

Become a mentor

The annual alumni event is an opportunity to reconnect and for us to thank our alumni who have supported our range of events and activities by judging moots, attending employment events, giving inspiring and insightful professional lectures and mentoring students.

My advice to prospective students is to think about the long term: you only spend three years at university. A law degree is a fantastic base for a wide range of career options.

For anyone looking to start a career in law, I would offer one key piece of advice. Begin your professional journey with an open mind. Whilst you may have pre-conceived ideas about which area of law you would, or would not, like to work in, you may discover what you really enjoy once you begin practising.

My time at the University of Southampton, specifically my experiences on various student societies, equipped me with the necessary project management skills needed to complete my day-to-day work and run the projects. Also, learning how to effectively network definitely helps me a lot at work, as I’m constantly meeting distinguished individuals, including Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.

The highlight has to be getting appointed as an Honorary QC. Only about 20 solicitors have ever been given that honour. It was awarded to me for the work we did pursuing equal pay cases, and that’s the work I’m most proud of.
