Hi, I'm Stuart Popham and I studied within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

I had three great, formative years at Southampton. I obtained a thorough grounding in the law and, more particularly, a sense of where I might find the answers.

“I had three great, formative years at Southampton. I obtained a thorough grounding in the law and, more particularly, a sense of where I might find the answers. This has helped me immeasurably in later years.”

Stuart Popham graduated from the University of Southampton in 1975.

He is now retired, but since 2003 he was the Senior Partner (worldwide) of Clifford Chance LLP, the world’s largest law firm. Stuart joined the firm in 1976 and played a variety of key roles including leading its banking and finance practice areas.

Throughout his career he specialised in the provision of financial law advice for corporations and many of the world’s leading banks. He was based in the firm’s Singapore office from 1981 to 1984 before moving to the London office, where he had particular responsibility for the firm’s reputation and values.

Among his many roles, Stuart is a member of the International Advisory Board for the CBI and a director of the CBI London Board. He sits on the European Union Advisory Board for the City of London and is an International Envoy for London. He is also a director of PlaNet Finance, a charity which promotes micro finance to assist the alleviation of poverty, and a council member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs.
