Dr Alexandros X.M. Ntovas, presents paper at the European Society of International Law Conference
Dr Ntovas, Lecturer at the University of Southampton Law School and Member of the Institute of Maritime Law, delivered a paper at the 5th Biennial General Conference of the European Society of International Law in Valencia (13 to 15 September 2012) . The conference was hosted by the University of Valencia, in collaboration with the Centro de Estudios de Derecho y Relaciones Internacionales (CEDRI). The Swiss Confederation, the Spanish Government, the Regional Government of Valencia, the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, Broseta Law Firm and Bruylant Editeurs all kindly supported the conference. Oxford University Press generously sponsored part of the welcome cocktail, which was hosted at the Botanic Gardens of the University of Valencia.
The conference being consisted of eight fora and eight agorae, developed a unique approach in analysing every aspect of regionalism in current international law, giving thereby an opportunity for deep, interesting scientific discussions among all the participants and the members of the panels. “Only the best 24 among 190 submitted abstracts were selected for the agorae in a highly competitive process” . Alexandros sat, with Philippa Webb (King’s College London, UK) and René Urueña (Universidad de los Andes, Colombia), at the agora of “International Law Making”, the chairman of which – Professor Jean d’ Aspremont (University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands) – characterised as consisting a panel of “rising-star” scholars in their field. Alexandros delivered a paper (temporarily available at: The Sea of Deviation: Regional approaches to the principle of compatibility) on international fisheries law whereby evaluated the most recent international law making dynamics in the region of South Pacific Ocean.
Prior to the main conference, Dr Ntovas also presented an oral communication in relation to clausal construction and treaty interpretation at the inaugural meeting of the ESIL Interest Group of International where Judge Rüdiger Wolfrum (International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea) and Professor Maria Gavouneli (University of Athens, Greece) discussed the 30 years of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, under the co-ordination of Professor Miguel G. Garcia-Revillo (University of Cordoba, Spain).
