Haydathon Orchestra Extravaganza for Comic Relief

Published: 3 March 2009

University musicians are gearing up for the Haydathon project to benefit the BBC's Comic Relief.

University and local orchestras will perform EVERY ONE of Haydn’s 104 symphonies over the course of a (long, mad) weekend, Friday 13th until Sunday 15th March in the Turner Sims Concert Hall, with every penny going to Comic Relief.

The Haydathon opens with the Music Department lunchtime concert on Friday 13th – where recent Southampton conducting students will lead symphonies No 1, 2 & 3 – and continues through the televised BBC Comic Relief slot on Friday evening. Two further concerts and open sessions start at 9am Saturday, likewise on Sunday – and it all draws to a close with a grand finale on Sunday evening.

Seven symphony orchestras are involved, including both university orchestras, SUSU and the Sinfonietta, and professional musicians who are devoting their time and energy for free.
