Southampton ensemble wins 2010 Gramophone Award
Southampton’s research fellow Adrian Chandler and his baroque string ensemble La Serenissima have won the Baroque Instrumental category of the 2010 Gramophone awards.
Their CD Vivaldi: The French Connection is a selection of concertos for flute (Southampton’s Katy Bircher), bassoon and violin (Adrian Chandler himself). The CD explores aspects of Vivaldi's links with French patrons - such as the French ambassador to Venice, and an anonymous French patron for whom Vivaldi wrote 10 concerti - and the impact of French musical styles on his work. Gramophone's reviewer praised La Serenissima's the ‘bright attractiveness and vivacity’ of La Serenissima's orchestral sound.
