On Friday 26 April, the thirty strong Tianjin Municipal New Generation Peking Opera troupe from China made a detour on their UK concert tour and came to the University of Southampton at the invitation of Ping Hua, Researcher in Optoelectronics, and Thomas Seltz, Lecturer in Music.

They took to the stage of Turner Sims Concert Hall, first for a lecture on the Beijing Opera genre and tradition, followed by a concert involving traditional Chinese music, vocal performance, mime, and dance. The events were free and open to all and were thus attended by a wide variety of Southampton residents, from members of the Chinese community to students, music lovers and curious people. Guests of honour included the Mayor of Southampton who had welcomed the troupe to Southampton in the early morning. This successful event was made possible by the collaboration of MH Culture Ltd, Chinese Arts Southampton, Yau Brothers & Co Ltd, Confucius Institute and the Music Department, University of Southampton.
