(harpsichord) and students from Music at will perform at Mottisfont Abbey on 6 May.
Mottisfont was the family home of the influential harpsichord collector and advocate Raymond Russell, whose work had a decisive impact on the instrument’s 20th-century revival. The harpsichord to be used for the concert, which is currently in residence at Mottisfont, is a single manual instrument made by Michael Johnson. It is featured as an homage to Raymond Russell’s favourite instrument - the Goermann’s Taskin harpsichord – which was kept at the property before eventually becoming part of the Raymond Russell collection of early keyboard instruments at St Cecilia’s Hall, Edinburgh. Michael Johnson’s career has been strongly influenced by a visit he made to Mottisfont in the early 1970’s to take measurements from this now world famous harpsichord.
