Dr Joseph Browning is Lecturer in Music at City, University of London. His research interests span musical culture during the Anthropocene, the transnational scene surrounding the Japanese shakuhachi, and the ethnographic study of Western art music and sound art. His current research, originally funded by a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship, is an ethnographic study of the UK contemporary music scene, exploring how ideas about musical organicism and vitalism – which imagine music as patterned or animated like the natural world – relate to debates around environmentalism, biopolitics and the role of contemporary music in today's society. His work has appeared in journals including Ethnomusicology, Ethnomusicology Forum, Journal of Musicology, Journal of the Royal Musical Association, and Twentieth-Century Music.
