Academic Excellence and Impact: 2014 ETA’s Nominees

The 2014 Excellence in Teaching Awards (ETA’s) nominees have been announced and we are very proud to say that again we have a high number of academics listed from Ocean and Earth Science.
The ETA's are an annual event hosted by the Students Union at University of Southampton. The ETA's give our student's the opportunity to recognise the support of the staff that teach them and show how that teaching has had a real impact on their academic experience.
The categories for the awards are:

- Contribution to Academic Support
Here are the nominees for Ocean and Earth Science this year, with just a few of the comments from the students that nominated them.
Carl Amos | Teaching & Learning Lifetime Achievement

Prof Amos has been instrumental in teaching and training coastal engineering graduates across the world through his outstanding career, with a very innovative and hand-on approach, making him inspirational for many students throughout his 15 years teaching at the University.

The Excellence in Teaching Awards allows students across the university to highlight, recognise, and celebrate their favourite lecturers. Last year, due to his commitment in delivering an engaging learning experience, Dr. Ian Harding , from Ocean and Earth Science, was 'Highly Commended' in the ‘ Overall Outstanding Lecturer' category and came second overall.

Ocean and Earth Science Southampton prides itself on the high quality academic experience it offers its students. This is demonstrated right across the department from our teaching to our research excellence. The last year has been particularly successful with students and staff being recognised for their achievements on an international level, top marks in the 2013 National Student Survey in all disciplines and being positioned 30 in the world for Marine and Earth Sciences in the QS World University Rankings by subject .
Professor Tim Minshull, Head of Ocean and Earth Science also commented, 'It's great to see teaching staff at all career stages and across all our degree programmes in the list of nominees. Well done to all'.
