The University of Southampton has begun partnership with Sense about Science on its Voice of Young Science (VoYS) programme in 2020, along with more than 30 other leading universities, funding bodies and learned and professional societies around the UK and Europe. VoYS is built on an ethos of researchers taking responsibility for public discussion, which our university supports.

VoYS is a unique network of thousands of early career researchers (ECRs) around Europe who are committed to playing an active role in debates about science and evidence. Sense about Science founded VoYS 16 years ago when ECRs were becoming involved in challenging misleading claims about research, but lacked confidence and engagement skills in policy and media settings. This active community gives advice and support to each other in the different challenges they are tackling all over the world. Sense about Science supports the network in their campaigns and projects, as well as offering workshops where ECRs develop the confidence and know-how to engage with the media and policymakers.

November 2020 Standing up for Science training workshop

The University is partnering on the Standing up for Science workshop that will be held in November 2020 to help researchers communicate evidence clearly and put research findings in the context of real-world events. The workshop will also help develop confidence and skills in public, policy and media engagement, as well as provide access to the associated support from VoYS network throughout the year.

The call for the applications will be open soon and we can’t wait to see how our PhD students and postdocs will shape VoYS and make the network their own. We want our ECRs to be part of the new generation of researchers who are motivated, inspired and empowered as academic citizens to stand up for science and improve the way science informs policy and is discussed in public life.

University of Southampton ECRs can join the VoYS network to make sure they don't miss out on their chance to apply for a free place.
