The RUTI trial

Researching Chinese herbal medicine for recurrent urinary tract infections.

Recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTIs) are a commonly occurring problem for many women. They can cause considerable discomfort and distress and may have a major impact many aspects of a woman's life. This website has been set up to provide information and support to anyone who is interested in the RUTI trial-a randomised controlled trial exploring the possible benefits of Chinese herbal medicines for this troublesome condition.

Within the 2000 years of the recorded history of Chinese herbal medicine there are many accounts of the treatment of conditions that appear to be recurrent urinary tract infections. More recently herbs have been shown to have antibacterial effects and there is some preliminary research suggesting that herbal treatment may be an effective option for RUTIs. Our aim is to subject these traditional practices to rigorous scientific scrutiny and to see if they can provide an effective and safe alternative to antibiotic treatment. The RUTI trial is the first step in this process and we will only be recruiting women from some GP practices in and around Southampton, Hove and North London.

Welcome to the website and if you have any questions or need more information please don't hesitate to email us at or phone the trial helpline on 07530 196142.
