Research assessment

Staff at S3RI focus on research into core statistical methodology for generic problems and their applications, particularly in the social sciences, engineering, health and medicine.

We also undertake and co-ordinate collaborative and cross-disciplinary research, across the University of Southampton, nationally and internationally, with projects involving partners including government agencies and industry. In the last UK national assessment of research excellence (RAE2008), our work formed part of the submissions in Statistics and Operational Research (OR), and in Sociology and Social Policy. Judges ranked our contributions in the top ten on grade point average and in the top two for power.

With more than 50 academic, research and support staff, we make up one of the largest groups of statisticians in UK universities. S3RI is actively involved in several University centres including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) the National Centre for Advanced Tribology (nCATS), the ESRC Centre for Population Change, the ESRC Third Sector Centre and the Macmillan Survivorship Research Group.
