Using Music Mixer Kits to Introduce Electrical and Electronic Engineering to A-Level Physics Students

The University of Southampton’s unique Music Mixer kit, created by Southampton lecturers, provides a visual and practical way for teachers to deliver electronics concepts within the physics curriculum. The Music Mixer is centred around a circuit that combines two audio signals, such as music from students’ mobile phones. This aims to encourage students to experiment with topics including resistance and potential dividers, waves and interference, capacitance and Planck’s constant. The kits have been piloted in schools with support from the UK Electronics Skills Foundation and IET Engineering Education Grant, plus a scheme encouraging electronics companies to sponsor kits for local schools has now been launched (http://www.ukesf.org/schools/music-mixer).
