PhD Studentship in how sea-level rise and extreme events will affect our natural cultural heritage

Hi, my name is Salma Sabour and I am a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral scholar studying within the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, University of Southampton.

The Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholarship provides me with a unique opportunity to conduct an inspirational exploration of man-based and natural culture in a changing climate. I have always been passionate about cultural, social, economic and environmental systemic interactions and understanding the multiple connexions that make us choose and decide and I look forward to this research project to better understand the interactions between sea-level rise impacts and heritage.

During this research project, I will study the interactions between sea-level rise, extreme events and heritage, firstly through an understanding and an analysis of the effect of past and present sea-level rise and extreme events on heritage, to identify the most recurring effects and where they occur. Secondly, I will examine global, regional then local case studies to assess different scenarios and projections of sea-level rise and extreme events and, study their impacts in different domains as engineering, economics (e.g. tourism) and society (e.g. oral traditions, social practices, performing arts) using risk analysis methods. Finally, an analysis of risk management and risk reduction techniques will advocate alternative methods (e.g. Nature Based Solutions) to address sea-level rise and extreme events aftermaths on heritage.

The multidisciplinarity of the subject is consolidated by a stimulating and inspiring interdisciplinary supervisory team: Dr Sally Brown (Faculty of Engineering and the Environment), Dr Marije Schaafsma (Faculty of Geography and Environment), Professor Robert Nicholls (Faculty of Engineering and the Environment) and Dr Ivan D Haigh (Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton).
