Hi, I'm Sophie Cannon and I am a Leverhulme Trust Doctoral scholar studying within the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton.

I graduated from the University of Southampton with a masters in Ship Science in 2015. I have always been fascinated by historic ships and now I am able to use my engineering knowledge to unlock some of the secrets of 19th Century merchant ships.

I am using modern naval architecture techniques to try and understand how the merchant ships of 19th Century Britain changed over the course of the century. My research is cross disciplinary between Engineering and Archaeology.

My supervisors are Dr Steve Boyd (Engineering and the Environment) and Dr Julian Whitewright (Archaeology)
