Published: 20 August 2013Origin: Engineering

Pioneering research from the University of Southampton was featured on German TV’s biggest science show “Die große Show der Naturwunder” last week.

Tim Leighton, Professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics from ISVR, demonstrated the University's revolutionary ultrasonic attachment for taps, which uses bubbles to massively enhance the ability of water to clean. This technology was developed through collaboration between Tim and Dr Peter Birkin and Dr Doug Offin (Chemistry). The attatchment won the Royal Society's premier award for innovation (the 2012 Brian Mercer Award for Innovation) and the 2012 Institute of Chemical Engineering Award for "Water Management and Supply".

You can watch the show, which has a quiz-style format  (Professor Leighton's research features at 7 minutes in, with Tim appearing at 8 minutes 20 seconds).
