Alison Criddle MSc Social Work, 2010
Graduate

The University of Southampton has a lot to offer postgraduate students.
Choosing Southampton
I didn't have to spend much time researching social work courses to come across Southampton's excellent reputation.
On deciding to return to university, I spent a considerable amount of time researching the subject and the unis on my shortlist. I was impressed with Social Sciences' literature, which I felt showed excellent academic content and a commitment to the welfare and development of students. These thoughts were echoed by a close friend who had successfully completed their social work studies a couple of years before.
Studying postgraduate social work studies
I found the 'practice placement learning' aspect of the course challenging but by far the most rewarding. The University provides each student with a practice assessor (PA), who you meet regularly while on placement. The support, encouragement and, most important, challenge I received from my PA was incredible. Nothing was too much trouble, from essay writing advice to support with reflection after a bad day in practice.
The University of Southampton has a lot to offer postgraduate students: a great location, good facilities and a strong academic grounding. For me, I found most enjoyment in meeting like-minded colleagues who have now become friends.
After graduation
I can't believe how quickly graduation has come around. It only seems like yesterday I walked into the very first lecture of the course! The course has really opened my eyes to the opportunities available post-qualifying. I'm hoping to initially work with looked-after children, maybe spend some time working abroad, and eventually undertake a PhD.
