Every step is a victory
Every step is a victory

Keeping motivated and active during lockdown has been especially difficult! Usually at university, I use the Jubilee gym and swimming pool regularly and take part in Focus sport sessions at Wide Lane. Suddenly, without a structure to my day, my workout routine was non-existent for the first couple of weeks during the lockdown. However, I eventually decided I needed to get moving to help my mood and mental state!

Since then, I have been using the Strava running app which has helped me track my runs. I usually hate running but I am quite competitive. So I try to beat my previous times, as well as my friends. Also, running with dogs makes it so much more entertaining. I try to run 5k three times a week and on my days in between I mix up home workouts and rest days. I set myself small goals and I have really seen an improvement in my running since I started! Initially, I struggled to control my breathing. But I have built it up really slowly and now I can run 5k without stopping.

Having a P.E. teacher as a parent has been useful because we already had basic equipment such as dumbbells and resistance bands at the house. I do feel slightly guilty however, when I have not moved all day. But my parents have: gone on a 10k run, taken the dogs out, done a workout for the school children and done the gardening.

Exercising at home has really lifted my mood during this lockdown period and I really look forward to Sports and Wellbeing reopening so I can get back into my routine.
