Event details

What has been the impact of phonics teaching on spelling development? How can I help children apply the skills they have learned across the curriculum? How can I help children who struggle with handwriting? How do I get the balance between word reading and comprehension? Where next with phonics?

If you are keen to explore any of these questions or have others about literacy in Reception and Key Stage 1 that you would like to discuss and investigate with other teachers interested in the same area, do come along, either in person or electronically to the initial meeting of the Early Literacy Inquiry Group.

Initially we will discussing the questions that interest us, and then deciding how we can most effectively investigate them together.  The group will be led by Miranda Dodd, from the University of Southampton, who has recently completed a project as a teacher researcher, and fully understands the demands on busy teachers.  It is intended to support you in collaboratively investigating key questions relating to early literacy so that you can develop your practice and improve children’s learning  rather than take hours of your time.

The group is free to attend.  We hope to be able to use technology to allow remote access for teachers who cannot make the face-to-face session. Please contact Janice Griffiths (jbg@soton.ac.uk) if you would like to explore further.

Book a place by contacting the Mathematics and Science Learning Centre at the details below and provide your name, email address, school and any dietary or accessibility requirements.
