Event details

Professional development through action ‎research This collaborative, professional development programme, has developed from a very successful funded research project carried out at Southampton Education School. Participating science teachers (primary and secondary) will ‎work together to develop resources and activities ‎that incorporate aspects of dialogic teaching, ‎argumentation and groupwork into their everyday ‎practice. ‎

The programme involves:

  • Participating in three training & planning days from March to July 2015 at Mathematics and Science Learning Centre, University of Southampton
  • Using the new and existing NC guidelines to ‎adjust mid-term planning in science to include ‎groupwork activities, discussion about evidence, ‎constructing & evaluating explanations ‎
  • Observations and discussions with the programme tutor that will help you reflect and ‎develop your practice ‎
  • Participating in a poster presentation session in July 2015 to ‎share experiences, findings and resources with ‎other teachers and colleagues. ‎

Why take part?

This programme will help you develop:‎

  • more interactive and ‎discursive ‎lessons
  • more effective learning experiences for your pupils; growing ‎evidence suggests that this approach to ‎teaching science increases student attainment ‎and interest in science ‎
  • increased confidence and competence at ‎delivering high quality science lessons
  • collaboration with researchers and teacher ‎educators and ‎establishing collaborative networks with other ‎participating teachers ‎
  • develop your teaching practice through ‎research-based CPD‎
  • enhance your CV with experiences in ‎conducting and participating in action research

You could take part individually or as a group of ‎teachers from the same school.

The dates for further training days are:

  • Monday 11th May 2015 (2-5pm)
  • Friday 3rd July (2-5pm)

Teachers working with KS1, KS2 ‎and KS3 are welcome to participate. ‎

The cost of the programme is £150 for all three days, including resources, refreshments and lunch.

To book on the programme, please contact the Mathematics and Science Learning Centre (below) and give your name, job title, key stages taught, email address, school and any accessibility or dietary requirements.
