Event details

The current psychology A-level specifications require a substantially increased level of mathematical content, from numeracy to statistics. Mathematical content comprises at least 10% of A-level marks. Moreover, there are now inspectable Ofqual requirements to conduct practical work and to teach research skills, including electronic data analysis and literature searching. Teachers will also want to take account of new guidance from the British Psychological Society and Association for the Teaching of Psychology. The aim of this course is to introduce teachers to a range of strategies for planning and carrying out practical work and maths during teaching and to be familiar with resulting practical and ethical issues. This 1 day course is suitable for new psychology A-level teachers.

Learning outcomes

All participants will:

  • Understand the context and purpose for the development of new mathematical requirements and be able to identify compulsory elements of mathematical content from their chosen specification
  • Be able to plan the integration of mathematical content and practical work into schemes of work and lesson planning
  • Understand how to plan relevant, manageable and ethical practical work
  • Better understand the range of mathematical operations that can form part of A-level assessment and practice some of these
  • Become familiar with a range of technological tools to aid the teaching and learning of mathematical content
  • Practice statistical analysis
