Research Group: Mathematics Education Special Interest Group

The University of Southampton has enjoyed a national and international reputation for research and development in mathematics education since the early 1960s. The Mathematics Education Special Interest Group (formerly Centre) was established in the early 1970s to develop research and teaching in the area of Mathematics Education, to provide a base for research in Mathematics Education across the University, and to serve as a focus for work in Mathematics Education throughout the Southampton region.

Group Overview

Members of the Mathematics Education SIG aim to advance research that is theoretically-informed and policy-relevant and to deepen understandings of the relationships between mathematics, curricula and society. With extensive experience as researchers, teacher-educators, and teachers in a variety of contexts, the Group is proactive in seeking and maintaining strong links with mathematics education groups in other universities (in the UK and worldwide), the professional community, and with policy-makers and funding bodies.

Members of the Group publish books, book chapters and articles in international journals in the area of Mathematics Education and are represented on various editorial boards. The Group has particularly strong links with research associations such as the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM), the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (ERME), and the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME).

Within the UK, the Group is a founding stakeholder of the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) and an associate of the UK Further Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP) (with a role covering Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in particular). The Group is listed by the UK Social Science Information Gateway and the Science, Engineering and Technology Gateway.
