LMS Hardy Lecture Tour 2016

Organiser: Jelena Grbic

The Hardy Lectureship was founded in 1967 in memory of G.H. Hardy in recognition of outstanding contribution to both mathematics and to the Society. The Hardy Lectureship is a lecture tour of the UK by a mathematician with a high reputation in research.

The 2016 LMS Hardy Fellow is Professor Jacob Lurie (Harvard). Professor Lurie has had a major impact on modern day pure mathematics, in particular through his seminal work on derived algebraic geometry, higher category theory, stable homotopy theory and topological field theory. His earliest published work on surreal numbers was carried out while still at school, and since his PhD in 2004 he has held professorships at MIT and Harvard University.

Professor Lurie is an outstanding presenter of mathematics both in written form (he has already published an important text book on Higher Topos Theory and made available versions of his notes on various aspects of his work), and in lectures which are always well prepared and have great impact on audiences.

Jacob Lurie will visit the UK in June and July 2016 and he will also give talks at:

Oxford 20 June; Aberdeen 24 June; Glasgow 27 June; Leicester 30 June; Sheffield 5 July;

Cambridge 6 July; and The 2016 Hardy Lecture on Weil’s Conjecture for Function Fields in

London 8 July at 3.30 pm, JZ Young Lecture Theatre, UCL, London.
