Southampton was chosen because it offered a postgraduate specialist qualification in Allergy and had an excellent reputation. Gaining this qualification gives credibility to my work as an independent allergy nurse specialist.

It is easy to see why Southampton has established an excellent reputation as an allergy centre; the teaching has been superb. All the staff have been very sympathetic to the fact that I have had to balance the course with working on full shifts.

When I researched MSc options relating to immunology, and the Southampton MSc in Allergy suited me best as it was a great combination of science and it's clinical application to understanding the diseases and their treatments.

The Allergy MSc at Southampton was instrumental in my obtaining the Clinical Lecturer post in Paediatric Allergy at St. Thomas' Hospital

The fact that the MSc Allergy was available on a part time basis in the hospital trust where I embarked on my dietetic career made me confident of a flexible, practical and challenging course.

Deb was working as Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist in Asthma and Allergy at Bristol Children’s Hospital whilst studying part-time for her MSc. She was funded by a number of sources including an RCN Margaret Parkinson scholarship and two awards from the Florence Nightingale Foundation. She is 39. She graduated in 2010 with Distinction and was also awarded the 'Holgate AAIR Award for Excellence in Allergy' prize. 'My undergraduate degree was in English Literature, and although I loved it, it had limited application to my work as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and I felt I needed a relevant postgraduate degree. The MSc at Southampton was perfect, and consolidated all the experience I had gained over the previous 15 years working in paediatric allergy.'

I have to stress that this course is very serious and tough. However, by the end of the day, you must be very satisfied with and proud of what you have achieved.

I'm really pleased I chose Southampton and I was given the support and encouragement to carry out the whole MSc. I have been able use my new knowledge and skills to improve patient care and experience in allergy clinics in my workplace.
