Why study sociology and social policy, and the applied social sciences at Southampton?

Sociology, Social Policy and Applied Social Science degrees at Southampton offer our students choice and flexibility. All our programmes seek to apply the insights gained from different social theories to our understanding of the social world. As a student here at Southampton you can study areas such as culture and social identity, communities, social groups, crime and social control, gender, fashion, youth, race and ethnicity, social change, inequalities and social policies. Depending on your disciplinary interests you can choose the degree that suits you and you will also have the opportunity to select modules from a range of optional choices.

If you choose to study with us, you will be joining a lively and dynamic Division of 22 experienced lecturers most of whom have an international reputation in research as demonstrated in our recent excellent result in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. This means that students who come to study with us will enjoy high quality teaching and graduate with a highly regarded degree, informed by cutting edge research.

The decision of where to study is an important one and we advise all prospective applicants to come and look around the University. If you have not yet made a decision of where to study then you are welcome to come to talk to us on one of our Undergraduate Open Days. Once you apply you will also be invited to one of our Visit Days in February/March.
