Biological Sciences maintained its reputation for teaching, ranking fourth in the Russell Group

Chemistry, Biological Sciences and Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton have been recognised for achievements in one of the most prestigious league tables of UK universities, reflecting outstanding teaching by experienced academics in well-equipped laboratories.

Chemistry has jumped 10 places in the Guardian University Guide 2017, from 26th to 16th out of 120 universities in the table. This rise in the rankings follows increasing satisfaction by Chemistry students of the quality of education they have received and their future career prospects.

In all, 94 per cent of Chemistry students surveyed were satisfied both with their course and the quality of their lecturers’ teaching.

Ocean and Earth Science has risen two places in the Guide to 15th, 90 per cent of students were satisfied with their course and 91 per cent with the teaching. Biological Sciences maintained its reputation for teaching, ranking fourth in the Russell Group. 93 per cent of students were satisfied with their course and 94 per cent satisfied with their teaching.

Dean of Natural and Environmental Sciences Professor Rachel Mills comments: “I’m really pleased to see the sustained increase in league table position of disciplines across our Faculty in the Guardian University Guide.”

The rankings in the Guide are based on official data collected by the Higher Education Statistics Agency and on the National Student Survey published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
