A talk on UK Higher Education by a Kenyan academic currently working at University of Southampton, aimed at Kenyan students and parents considering Higher Education outside of Kenya.

Dr Amrit Mudher will give a talk and take questions on study at UK Universities, particularly in the Sciences.

The evening is aimed at parents, students, teachers and careers advisors interested in Higher Education in the UK.

Dr Mudher is a Kenyan Neuroscientist now working as an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton, a leading research institution in the UK. As well leading a research group in neurodegenerative diseases, Dr Mudher teaches in the University of Southampton's School of Biological Sciences degree programmes.

The talk will be of interest to all, no matter what subject the student in question is wishing to study in the UK. Dr Mudher will give her perspectives both as an academic and as someone who has made the journey from school in Kenya to a UK University and on to a successful career. Topics will include

  • Giving students and parents a sense of what it is like to study at a high ranking research institutions such as University of Southampton, particularly in the Sciences.
  • Examples of the sort of research that goes on at the University, and how that research informs the teaching.
  • Making students aware of exciting careers in Science and Technology fields and how this can lead to rewarding jobs after graduation.
  • Discussion of life at UK Universities, including how to be successful in your studies, the transition from School to University and from Kenya to the UK, and making the most of your time in the UK.
  • A Question and Answer session covering any topic about Higher Education outside of Kenya.

Additionally there will be information of particular interest to students wishing to study Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacology and other related disciplines from Dr Mudher's personal experience in these areas.

About Dr Amrit Mudher: Born in Nairobi and educated at Westlands Primary and Aga Khan Primary, King's College London and University of Oxford where she obtained her PhD in Neurosciences. Dr Mudher has worked at the Institute of Psychiatry at University of London before moving to University of Southampton to continue her research.

Dr Amrit Mudher,Research into the origins and causes of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's Disease, Fronto-temporal Dementia, Huntingdon's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and many others. The research will pave the way for therapeutic interventions to arrest such diseases
