Loneliness Awareness Week

Loneliness Awareness Week is taking place from 14 - 18 June 2021.

Loneliness is something that everyone experiences from time to time, and it’s an experience that has become even more common during the pandemic. The important thing to remember is that loneliness tends to be situational, and it is not permanent.

The Marmalade Trust’s Beginner’s Guide to Loneliness explains that loneliness come from a general sense of disconnection from others, and can be a feeling that we are lacking social connection and companionship. They explain that we can “fall into a cycle of loneliness: the longer we feel lonely, the more we start to isolate ourselves”. If making connections can be difficult, you could try some of the tips and techniques in the Social Anxiety guide written by the NHS.

Improving loneliness

It is important to try not to be critical of yourself or feel guilty for feeling lonely – remind yourself it is a normal human emotion. Next, think about small changes you can make in your life to help you manage the effects of loneliness and start to make more connections. Below are some ideas:

  • Red Cross have a digital classroom to help you develop skills to cope with loneliness, build confidence, and connect.
  • Try some self-care for loneliness , including writing a gratitude diary, creating a nurturing environment, or trying something new.
  • Reach out for a chat – whether you choose to speak to friends and family, or a support service , sometimes even a small social connections can make a big difference. If you’re self-isolating and struggling with loneliness, the NHS Volunteer Responder Service can arrange a call with you.
  • Get involved with online activities – there are still lots of groups and activities being delivered online. If you have a particular hobby or interest, you could look for a Students’ Union Society or a local group to join.
