Dr Nicole Tracy-Ventura is a Visiting Research Fellow in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.

I am currently an assistant professor at the University of South Florida, USA, and a visiting researcher at the University of Southampton. I was previously senior research associate on the ESRC-funded project “Social networks, target language interaction, and second language acquisition during the year abroad: A longitudinal study” from May 2011-October 2013, and postdoctoral research associate on the second Spanish Learner Language Oral Corpora (SPLLOC) project (August 2008-January 2010). I received my PhD in applied linguistics from Northern Arizona University in 2008.

Research interests

My areas of interest include second language acquisition, task-based language teaching, residence/study abroad, and corpus linguistics. Within second language acquisition, I have particular interests in the role of input and interaction in both informal and instructional contexts. My research primarily focuses on second language users of Spanish and English, although I also conduct research using L1 Spanish and English corpora.

Research project(s)

Languages and social networks abroad (LANG-SNAP)

Social networks, target language interaction, and second language acquisition during the year abroad.

While completing my MA and PhD, I taught postgraduate courses in language teaching methodology, curriculum and program administration, and second language acquisition, as well as undergraduate English and Spanish language classes.
