ISLNE Advisory Board Meeting 2020
The first annual advisory board meeting for the Intelligent Structures for Low Noise Environments Prosperity Partnership was held on the 5th March at the University of Southampton’s Boldrewood Innovation Campus.
Members of the ISLNE Prosperity Partnership came together in Southampton with members of the advisory board to review the progress of the research programme, provide strategic direction and advise on exploitation of the developed technology. During this one-day meeting, the ISLNE Management Group, which consists of the investigators and co-investigators from each of the project partners , was joined by the advisory board. Members of the advisory board include Directors from both BAE Systems and Lloyds Register , the University of Southampton’s Vice President, Research and Enterprise, Prof Mark Spearing , a representative from the EPSRC and independent senior expert advisors from The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and DSTL .
During the meeting, Prof Steve Daley gave an overview of the ISLNE programme, including key milestones and outputs to-date, and outlined the future plans of the partnership. Prof Chris Tuck from the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Additive Manufacturing gave an overview of their manufacturing capabilities and how this is being developed to support the ambitions of the ISLNE programme. Similar overviews were also given by the industrial partners, BAE Systems and Lloyds Register , as well as the University of Southampton academics supporting the programme in the areas of Fluid Structure Interactions and Electro-mechanical engineering design.
Following the formal presentations, PhD researchers from the Centre for Research in Active Control at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) gave a number of practical demonstrations exhibiting the practical outputs of the prosperity partnership to-date. This included Active Structural Acoustic Control and Active Noise Cancelling Headrest systems and both passive and active Acoustic Black Hole demonstrators. Following a networking lunch, Professor Stephen Turnock took the attendees on a tour of the Boldrewood Innovation Campus , including the newly opened National Infrastructure Laboratory .
