Professor Iain Cameron, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, has been elected as the new Chair of the Medical Schools Council.

Professor Cameron, who succeeds Professor Tony Weetman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Medicine, University of Sheffield, took up the post on the 1st of August 2013. Previously Professor Cameron was Deputy Chair for the Medical Schools Council.

He is a professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has been at the University of Southampton since 1999. His clinical and research interests include reproductive endocrinology and investigation of the impact of the maternal environment on early pregnancy. Prior to joining Southampton he held the Regius Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Glasgow from 1993.

Professor Cameron is a non-executive director of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust; a member of the Board of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration and a member of the Universities and Colleges Employers Association Clinical Academic Staff Advisory Group. For the Medical Schools Council he is a member of the Executive Committee and the Clinical Staffing Sub-Committee.

As Chair of the Medical Schools Council, Professor Cameron will spearhead strategies to optimise the generation of national health, wealth and knowledge through biomedical research and the profession of medicine, and he will ensure that the Council continues to be the authoritative voice of UK medical education.

Professor Cameron said 'I commend and thank Professor Tony Weetman for the fantastic work he has done as Chair of MSC and the initiative he has demonstrated over the last four years. I’m excited at the prospect of continuing this work and I look forward with great enthusiasm to the part that MSC will continue to play in ensuring that UK medical education and research remain among the finest in the world.'

Professor Tony Weetman, the outgoing Chair, said ‘I am delighted that Professor Cameron will succeed me as Chair of the Medical Schools Council. In his role as Deputy Chair he has shown himself to be extremely capable and the Council will benefit hugely from his leadership and expertise. The role of MSC Chair has been one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling of my career so far – I know that Iain will take to it perfectly.’
