Art delves deeper into medicine

A picture can paint a thousand words, or so the saying goes. But for Southampton medical students, a picture is also helping them understand and explore the world of medicine.

All year 1 students take the Medical Humanities module, which involves using arts and humanities disciplines to explore medicine. Through art, creative writing, film, music and drama, students imagine and engage with patients' diverse perspectives and experiences. They then produce creative pieces that reflect the synergetic process of learning the science of medicine and understanding human experience of illness.

A selection of pieces by students have been showcased within the Faculty and are available to view in the gallery below.

Students feel it allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the body and patients’ experiences, which is essential in providing quality treatment and care.

Alistair Shaw, who is currently on the BM5 course produced a drawing of the hand. He says: "I have gained a greater understanding of the composition of the hand and how all the different features work together to perform specific movements. Overall, drawing has greatly helped with my understanding of anatomy."
