Study looks at ways to improve the physical activity of older people in hospital

A clinical research fellow from Medicine won the People’s Choice award in this year’s Southampton Three Minute Thesis (3MT) event.

Dr Stephen Lim, clinical research fellow from Academic Geriatric Medicine and the Wessex CLAHRC, presented his study that is looking at ways to improve the physical activity of older people in hospital, which forms the basis of his PhD.

Evidence suggests that older people could spend as much as 83 per cent of their time lying in bed. Low mobility among older people is associated with poor outcomes.

The Southampton Mobility Volunteer (SoMoVe)programme evaluates the feasibility and acceptability of using trained volunteers to increase physical activity in older inpatients.

Stephen took part in the 3MT final alongside seven other University researchers.

The winner of the competition was Rachel Owen from the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, who will now go on to the national competition finals. The runner up was Alan Sanderson from the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment.

Stephen said: “It was a pleasure to take part in this year’s 3MT competition and I am delighted to be given the People’s Choice award. Keeping older people active in hospital is a very important issue so I am very pleased to have it recognised in this capacity.”

3MT® was first developed by the University of Queensland and is now a global initiative including many UK universities.  Participation in the competition helps our doctoral researchers to build their confidence and hone their presentation and communication skills.  It’s also a great way to find out about the exciting and varied research going on across the University at doctoral level. Previous Southampton winners have gone on to national 3MT success. In 2016 our winner Nazira Albargothy (Medicine) went on to win the UK competition in September 2016. And in 2017, our winner Lauren Jevons (also Medicine) got through to the final twelve in the UK semi-final.
