Sam Cave BA Music

Hi, I'm Sam Cave and I studied BA Music within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

I chose this University due to the flexibility of the course - which allows for great specialisation within your subject - and the teaching staff. I have chosen to focus on classical guitar performance and composition, and because of this I have opportunities to perform regularly and have pieces played by fellow students.

Why did you choose music?

I have always wanted to be a musician, and when the time came I had no doubt this is what I wanted to do. I was slightly worried about the security of work after finishing my degree but with careful planning I don't think it will be a problem.

What are you going to do after you've graduated?

I want to begin my career by teaching classical guitar for the Hampshire music service. I want to perform as often as possible and to compose music. I am also very interested in adjudicating music festivals and examining for the Royal Schools of Music. With a strong basic teaching employment I want to build a multi-dimensional musical career.

What do you like most about your course?

The opportunity to study guitar with people such as Vincent Lindsey-Clark and composition with Michael Zev Gordon and Michael Finnissy. I also love the opportunities for ensemble playing and meeting like-minded musicians.

Any advice for new first-years?

Talk to everyone!!! You never know who could help you - or you could help - in the future. Meet as many new people as possible and seek out your lecturers - be proactive!
