Foundation Year Computer Science

Develop your knowledge and understanding of the mathematics, science and technology that underpins computer science on this Foundation Year programme.

Introducing your degree

This full-time course is integrated with a further three-year BSc degree, and will build your understanding of the computer science disciplines.

Successful completion of this Foundation Year guarantees progression to our computer science degree at the University of Southampton Malaysia.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • explore scientific principles related to mechanics, electric fields and computer systems
  • use algebra, trigonometry, vectors, differential and integral calculus and more
  • plan and undertake experimental work
  • understand the role of technology and engineering in modern society, and the associated moral, social, ethical and legal issues
  • improve your English communication skills

Programme Structure

This programme is made up of three semesters.

If you achieve the minimum marks required for progression, you will be able to progress to year one of a selected undergraduate degree programme.

Typical entry requirements

QualificationEntry requirements
SPM/O level 5As in the science stream, including mathematics and physics. (Minimum B+ in additional mathematics required for SPM only)
STPM/A level ABB (cannot include subjects suitable for direct entry to undergraduate programmes, normally mathematics and physics). However, students need to show an aptitude for mathematics and may be asked to take a foundation mathematics test.
IB 32 points overall, and must include subjects suitable for direct entry into undergraduate programmes, normally both higher level mathematics and Physics.
UEC Senior Middle Level Students studying in English with 2 subject at A2 and 3 subjects at B3/B4 grade (not including mathematics Art, Chinese or Malay)
Bangladesh. Higher Secondary Certificate CGPA 3.5 overall with 3.5 in mathematics and physics
Brunei. Cambridge International A Levels ABB. Cannot study both mathematics and physics
Egypt. Certificate of General Secondary Education 85% Overall with 85% in mathematics and physics
India. Higher Secondary Certificate / Standard 12 75% overall with 75% in mathematics, from a non-recognised board (i.e. not ISC/CBSE/HSC)
Indonesia. Ijazah - Sekolah Menengah Atas/Madrasah Aliyah (SMA/MA) (Certificate of Graduation from Academic/Islamic Secondary School) Grade 7/10 with 7 in mathematics and physics
Pakistan. Intermediate / Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) A/770/70% overall, with 70% in mathematics and physics
Thailand. Certificate of Secondary Education / Maw 6 Mathayom 6 with overall GPA 3.0 with 3.0 in mathematics and relevant Science-stream subjects. Mathayom 5 with overall GPA 3.25 with 3.25 in mathematics and relevant Science-stream subjects.
UAE. General Secondary Education Certificate Examination 85% overall with 85% in mathematics and physics

English Language Qualification  

Students who achieve band FY IELTS 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all components will be required to follow the language pathway where students take the module English for Engineers and Scientists in semester one and two, as well as Communication in English in semester zero.

Students who achieve Band B IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in all components (or GCE O-Level (1119) Grade C) will only require English language classes in the first semester.

 We will accept a wide variety of international qualifications for entry to our Computer Science Foundation Year.

Typical course content

The modules on this programme will provide you with an introduction to mathematics, mechanics, computer programming, electricity and electronics and the principles of computer science.

Depending on your progression route you will study one of:  

  • Engineering Principles 
  • Theoretical Aspects of Computing

And one of:

  • Mechanical Science 
  • Computer Systems and Applications

Assessment and examinations 

You will be assessed through a range of coursework and formal assignments. During the year there are plenty of opportunities for you to check your progress and improve your performance through oral feedback on your work at workshops or through in-class tests.
