Foundation Year Engineering

Our Engineering Foundation Year will equip you with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to successfully meet the challenges of our engineering degree programmes.

Introducing your degree

This intensive year of study includes both theoretical and practical activities and attracts highly motivated students who want to make a change of direction in their studies.

If you don't have the A-level subjects required for entry to your chosen degree, our Foundation Year is the ideal choice for you.

Successful completion of this foundation year guarantees progression to one of our engineering degrees at the University of Southampton Malaysia and many more at the University of Southampton, UK.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • explore a diverse range of subjects and learn the core principles of engineering
  • learn through activities both theoretical and practical
  • get taught by staff at the cutting edge of their research fields
  • develop your English communication skills with a dedicated 'Communicating in English' module
  • join this foundation year in Semester 0 or in Semester 1, depending on your prior educational qualifications and experience

Programme Structure

This programme is made up of three semesters.

If you achieve the minimum marks required for progression, you will be able to progress to year one of selected engineering undergraduate degree programme.

Typical entry requirements

For 2023 entry
QualificationEntry requirements
IGCSE 5 A grades in the science stream, including Mathematics and Physics.
SPM 5 A grades in the science stream, including Mathematics and Physics, with minimum B+ in additional Mathematics.
IB MYP Grade 6 in 5 subjects including Physics, Mathematics and one other Science subject (excluding Personal Project and Physical and Health Education)

Other equivalent qualifications (including international qualifications) will be considered, please contact a UoSM education counsellor or your preferred agent to understand more.

English Language Qualification

1. With Language Pathway: 

Students who achieve IELTS 5.5 overall, or UEC English B4 or equivalent will be required to attend an additional English language module (English for Engineers and Scientists) both in semester 1 and 2. 
OR ALTERNATIVELY

2. Non-Language Pathway:

Students who achieve IELTS 6.5 overall, with minimum 6.0 in each component, or Grade C in SPM 1119 English (cohort before 2021), SPM CEFR Level B2 or above (cohort from 2021 onwards), Grade C in GCSE English, Grade A in IGCSE English as a Second Language, B3 in UEC English or equivalent.

Typical course content

Our Engineering Foundation Year provides an introduction to mathematics, mechanics, computer programming, electricity and electronics and the principles of engineering.

You will learn English for academic purposes as well as develop your personal skills as an effective, independent and reflective learner.
