Exhibition celebrates women’s role in research and teaching
Eye-catching artwork which highlights the important role women play in the world of academia will be shown at the University of Southampton’s John Hansard Gallery.
Over 30 pieces were created as part of a competition to celebrate the positive work of women in Higher Education, run by the
Women in Science, Engineering, Technology and Humanities
(WiSET+) group at the University.
Partnered with the
John Hansard Gallery
and the University of Southampton’s Winchester School of Art, WISET+ encouraged entrants from the University community and the wider public to celebrate a female colleague, tutor, student or significant role model from history – exploring the theme of women in academia in any way they wished and in any medium.
The result is an inspiring exhibition due for display at the city centre gallery between Wednesday 19 and Saturday 22 June 2019. It includes a wide variety of works from paintings, poetry, film and animation to origami, crocheted and knitted pieces, and even an iced cake!
Chair of WiSET+,
Dr Dawn-Marie Walker
, comments: “Through world-leading research discoveries and excellence in teaching, women play a vital role in universities and colleges across the UK and globally. It is crucial to help open up and broaden opportunities for women by championing their work and our competition entrants have risen to this challenge with a fantastic display of creativity and talent.”
A second showing of the work will take place at
The Winchester Gallery
at
Winchester School of Art
between Wednesday 26 and Saturday 29 June. Competition winners will be revealed at a celebration event at the School on Tuesday 25 June, along with winners of a children’s award chosen from work produced at a free family art workshop at John Hansard Gallery on Saturday 22 June (12–4pm).
The exhibition coincides with the annual WiSET+ awards which rewards and recognises the contribution and exceptional work of students, academics, technical or managerial staff across the University of Southampton who have supported women above and beyond their normal role. These awards will take place at a special invitation only event at John Hansard Gallery on Tuesday 18 June.
