The University of Southampton has been named in the top 100 of a global league table for the fifth year running.

Results from the celebrated QS world rankings placed the institution at 81st out of 1,500 others, rating in the top six per cent worldwide.

The University was also highlighted for its impressive employment outcome rates among its students, ranking 12th in the UK.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E. Smith said the top 100 rankings confirm Southampton’s commitment to inspiring excellence among its community and beyond to create an inclusive world where its students and graduates prosper.

He added: “Our position in the QS rankings is a real indicator of our global reputation as a leading university which pioneers world-class, life-changing research and champions excellent education to shape the next generation of scientists and scholars worldwide.”

The QS world rankings, now in its 20th year, rates universities based on the impact of their research and global reputation – and for the first time has included sustainability and the number of students who find employment after graduating.

The University of Southampton was specially praised by QS judges for creating an inclusive environment for its international students.

Postgraduate Phuong Linh An travelled from Hanoi in Vietnam to study at Southampton because of its global reputation for academic excellence.

The Master of Business Administration student added: “My journey at the university has been so meaningful and rewarding. The staff are very friendly and supportive, providing us with the best opportunity to grow and to network. There are a lot of activities around the campus, and the university recognises and rewards students for their contribution.”

The latest QS results cap a successful six months for Southampton, which earlier this year saw six subjects place in the top 50 of the QS’s associated world subject rankings .

For student Ananya Sharma, from New Delhi in India, the University of Southampton’s high league table ratings was enough to encourage her to apply.

She said: “Southampton offers many additional resources to students which go beyond academics – additional language classes, mental wellbeing support, career and employability advice, there are so many resources available worth seeking out.

“I love that Southampton is a student city – my best memory has been living a stone's throw away from some of my best friends. We do everything together, and I never feel alone knowing that my friends are so close by.”
